Pasture Poultry – How we raise our meat birds!
Feeding our family & Yours the BEST!
Did you know that chickens raised in the US are banned from being imported into the UK? This is because the US allows poultry farms to spray or dunk chickens, after being processed, with bleach.
They report that the levels of bleach used are safe for human consumption but the UK (and we agree) believe that it is an unhealthy and unnecessary step. This informative article lays out why it is not necessary and why – https://www.soilassociation.org/causes-campaigns/top-10-risks-from-a-uk-us-trade-deal/what-is-chlorinated-chicken/!
“Chlorine washing and routine use of antibiotics should not be seen as a way to compensate for cramped or dirty conditions on the farm or in the abattoir.” – Soil Association Article
Our Practices
Processing day
Our processing starts about 18 hours the day before the processing takes place. We remove the chickens from the tractors and they are placed in crates. While this step is heartbreaking to us (we love seeing them on the fresh grass), this is necessary to ensure the chickens pass any remaining food in their system – ensuring their crops are clean, reducing the chance of contamination during processing. This also keeps them calm, resulting in less stress caused to our birds.
Fresh water is used in every step. Bleach and chemicals are not used. All natural soap is used for washing tools and hands frequently. We pride ourselves in not needing to use bleach or chemicals.
All About The Good Quality
These chickens are raised for their fast growth. They are the same breed large scale poultry farms raise however ours have a completely different life, they are loved and cared for, and they see fresh grass and enjoy fresh air. This breed is not meant to live long lives. Their weight becomes too much for their legs and heart. We take pride in giving them an great life while growing pasture poultry for our table and yours.
