A load of bull

When we first started researching which breed of bovine would be the best fit for our farm, we had a few non-negotiables:
✅ Friendly temperament
✅ Bred for beef
✅ Good mothers
✅ Easy birthing
✅ Gentle on fences
✅ Hardy in both cold and warm weather

After plenty of research, we landed on Irish Dexters—and they checked all the boxes and then some. They’re a smaller breed, meaning they’re easier on the land, require less feed, and still provide high-quality beef. Naturally, once we had our cows settled in, the next step was breeding—because let’s be honest, baby calves are adorable, and we’re here for the beef.

Enter: The Rent-a-Bull

After connecting with an amazing couple who share our passion for Dexters, we decided to rent a bull—yes, that’s a thing! Rather than keeping a bull year-round, this option allows us to bring one in just for breeding season.

Our first pick—the main man himself—wasn’t immediately available, so we opted for one of his offspring instead. Everything seemed to be going according to plan… until it wasn’t.

Five Days Later…

Unfortunately, our rented bull only lasted five days before an old injury from when he was about eight months old flared up. That meant back to square one.

Now, we wait.

We could do pregnancy checks, but for this round, we’ve decided it’s not worth it. Instead, we’ll find out mid to late August whether or not the ladies are expecting.

Farming is always an adventure, and this is just another unexpected turn in the road. Fingers crossed for some happy, healthy Dexter calves!
